On day four of play, the hosts had nine wickets in hand and needed 227 more runs to win. Tom Latham, the first batter, was removed from the game just after Kane Williamson on the field. The former captain and Rachin Ravindra then let their guard down as they put up 64 runs for the fourth wicket. At that point, Dane Piedt scored his third run of the inning, bringing the score to 117/3.

At this point, South Africa would have hoped to start a collapse and recover. However, when he batted coolly and collectedly to reach his 32nd Test century—his third of the series—in four innings, a certain Williamson had other plans. Will Young provided him with excellent assistance, forming a partnership and instilling calmness both in the dressing room and during the game.

The pair ensured they would not let the visitors close as they added an undefeated 152 to put New Zealand across the finish line and win the series 2-0. Williamson returned on 133, but Young also reached his fifty not out on 60. Despite having an inexperienced squad, South Africa put in a better performance and led the game at one point. However, they ultimately lost the Test match as a result of their collapse in the second innings, losing six wickets for only 33 runs.
